Global Explorer Yachts manages new build projects for discerning clients around the world. Darren Nightingale is the General Manager of this operation.

Darren was born into a yachting family in Australia in 1969. He grew up racing sailing yachts which is where he spent all his free time. He completed an apprenticeship as an electrical and instrument technician with a large petro chemical company and continued to work for them for some years. After this he returned to yachting as this is where his aspirations lay. The next 20 years on the sea and in project management positions built a solid foundation of the technical, operational and management side of the superyacht industry.

When asked about superyacht construction, Darren had this to say:

“To construct a superyacht today you must have a team with extensive technical knowledge managing the project all the way through, from writing specifications and contract negotiations, general arrangement and design, through the entire build process until commissioning and delivery. This has to be done in a professional manner, dealing with the different personalities you find on these projects in a way that keeps everyone pushing in the same direction. You will need to be able to work within, and manage, high stress situations to produce a favourable outcome. They will occur in these highly technical and complex projects. Having previously worked as a Captain managing superyachts and the high stress environment that come with them, I was suitably prepared for these challenges when I began down the project management path 10 years ago.”
